PK- the One Time I Saw a Bollywood Blockbuster

So last night I did something I haven't done in a reaaaaally long time. I went to see a Hindi movie, the box hit PK. The movie was directed by Rajkumar Hirani and stars Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, and Sushant Singh Rajput. Within two weeks of its release, the movie has become the highest-grossing film of all time in India as well as worldwide. Bharat Mata Ki Jai!

The movie was definitely classic-hit material. With Aamir Khan's (obviously) brilliant acting, Anushka Sharma's lovable charm (and extremely fashionable attire), and the extremely well thought out humor, the movie is a must see for people of all ages (and perhaps even ethnicity).

So what exactly makes PK highest-grossing film of all time material? Well, since I have a slightly vexatious penchant for lists, here goes (SPOILER ALERT):

  1. The concept- The idea of a planet somewhere out there harboring similar life forms is pretty cool, but how about if they came to us to research our species? Now that's a story!
  2. The issues- Honestly I think nobody does this better than Aamir Khan. With his highly successful television series, Satyamev Jayate, which investigated into different issues within Indian society, Aamir Khan has established himself as someone who truly knows how the Indian society works- our strengths, our weaknesses, our way of thinking. PK highlights many (troublesome) aspects of Indian culture- our slightly crazy religious rituals, our over-reliance on priests and pundits, conflicts between ethnic groups.
  3. The music- Seriously, the soundtrack was pure amaze. My favorite song in the soundtrack is about God, and where he is in times of darkness (Youtube link here).
  4. The ending- Hahaha Ranbir Kapoor in the end though- classic! And can I just take this opportunity to voice how much I love Aamir Khan? Honestly, he hasn't messed up even once in his acting career. Here's to more movies!

So yes, to sum up, watch PK if you haven't yet!! It's a really good movie (and this is coming from someone who's probably only watched like 10 Hindi movies).
