Punjabi Girl in America
There are two things in life that make Sarah Robin very happy: vibrant spices and full tummies.
When Sarah first came to the United States as a refugee in 2012 from Pakistan, though, she couldn’t find food that made her mouth water and her taste buds sing. There were few restaurants that served the authentic Pakistani food she missed so much.
As a Christian woman in a predominantly Muslim country, her life was in danger due to family conflicts, thus she had to leave her hometown in Punjab.
“I think the only thing which I really loved about my country is the food,” Sarah said.
Sarah now runs Punjabi Girl, a catering business in Syracuse. She mainly cooks Pakistani food, but with a twist: she comes up with her own take on traditional recipes.
New Exhibit at ArtRage Commemorates Women’s Suffrage Movement
A sculpture of a black girl holding a while Barbie. A looped video of a woman getting slapped. A ceramic figure of a woman holding a protest sign.
These are just a few of the pieces one can view at a new exhibit hosted by ArtRage gallery in Syracuse.
The exhibit, titled “Seen and Heard,” commemorates the centennial anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement in New York. Gallery organizer Kimberly McCoy said there is a special value in recognizing the work being done to combat gender inequality today.
“It’s a hundred years after women have won the right to vote, but is women’s equality really realized?” she said at the gallery.
The Seen and Heard exhibit showcases work from seventeen local women artists. Art pieces come in a variety of mediums, from fiber art and sculpturing, to video and photography, to quilt-work and ceramic art.
Warrior Queen: Shewa Shwani
A broadcast news feature package on Shewa Shwani, a SUNY-ESF university student who operates a scarf business on the side. I produced this video for a broadcast class at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Newhouse Website
I began working for the Student News Team my sophomore year at Syracuse University. The Team is responsible for profiling events, speakers and individuals on campus on a regular basis. All articles and photographs contributed go onto the Newhouse website, which is accessed by professors and staff, students, alumni and prospective students. Some of the skills I've learned from being a part of the Team include learning how to take rapid yet efficient notes during fast-paced speaker series and events, photographing individuals in action, and conducting in-depth profile interviews.
While working for the team, I started Newhouse's first international student spotlight series. Check out some of the profiles I did;
Here are some other pieces I'm proud of;
